ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH Highway 90, Long Beach, MS Hours: 9:00 am - J :00 pm Thursday, April 1st In 1904, the Vincentians (a community of Catholic priests) purchased the property to be used as a vacation retreat for priests. They built a Gothic style church known as the “Church of the 13 Altars”, which was destroyed in 1969 by Hurricane Camille. A new church, now serving approximately 1500 families, was dedicated in 1972. The 53-foot high church is topped by a cross and is intended to serve as a beacon for boaters and fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. Its pyramidal shape made of wood and steel is an adaption of the “Cross”. The church contains 9,380 square feet and will seat approximately 450 people. The stained glass windows inside the church depict the Mativity (west), the Resurrection (north), the Ascension (east), the Pentecost (south). The crucifix from the original church hung on the east wall of the church is also from the original church. Fourteen plaques on the interior walls of the church depict the stages of Jesus’ last journey to Calvary. Adjacent to the church stands the Parish Life Center completed in November 2002. Glass is used very effectively on the exterior walls to provide a spendid view of the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding landscape. The building houses a main banquet room, which will hold approximately 450 guests. It is used for receptions and parish gatherings. Several smaller rooms are used as meeting rooms and for a nursery. The building includes a full service kitchen with state-of-the-art equipment. The Adoration/Meditation Chapel is a 24-hour place of prayer.
