BWYC Defends GYA Lipton Title and gets its 20th Lipton Win
Bay St. Louis - Speaking of the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Challenge Cup Championship it was described over the past few weeks as “World Class”, “the crown jewel of one-design-racing in the Gulf Yachting Association” and our BWYC Commodore Chris Trapani called it the “Super Bowl" of sailing in the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA). Thanks to 2010 Lipton Cup General Chairman and former BWYC Commodore Corky Hadden, Principal Race Officer Clinton T. Edwards and their respective Committees all of those descriptions appropriately applied both on and off the water at the 90th edition of the Lipton Cup Championship event. Competition for the Lipton Trophy began in 1920 and the tenth decade of that competition has just begun. The year 2005 was the only washout (DNC) of the competition since 1920 because of the widespread devastation of Hurricane Katrina. It was an exciting Labor Day Weekend at Bay-Waveland Yacht Club and BWYC was an outstanding Host in every respect.
Having won the Lipton Cup Championship in 2009, BWYC has successfully and very impressively defended its title in the 80 Skipper, 20 boat (Flying Scots), 4 race series with race finishes of 1-1-1-2 for a total of 5 points. Pontchartrain Yacht Club (PontYC) placed 2nd with finishes of 3-2-2-4 and 11 points. Pass Christian Yacht Club (PCYC) was 3rd in the 20 boat fleet of finely tuned Flying Scots with finishes of 5-4-6-1 and 16 points.
The other 17 teams and their overall points in the 2010 Lipton Cup Championship event were Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans at (20), Buccaneer Yacht Club at (23) points, New Orleans Yacht Club (25), Fort Walton Yacht Club (39), Mobile Yacht Club (40), Houston Yacht Club (40), Pensacola Yacht Club (41), Gulfport Yacht Club (42), Birmingham Yacht Club (44), Lake Charles Yacht Club (49), Fairhope Yacht Club (55), Biloxi Yacht Club (57), St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club (57), Long Beach Yacht Club at (63), Jackson Yacht Club (65), Navy Yacht Club (76) and Tammany Yacht Club (76).
In addition to defending its title, BWYC was seeking its 20th overall win in Lipton Cup sailing competition which it did achieve. As of now BWYC has 20 wins, SYC has 19 wins and 3 ties for 1st place, PYC has 11 wins and 2 ties, BYC has 7 wins, PCYC has 7 wins, St.ABYC has 6 wins and 1 tie for 1st place, NOYC has 4 wins, St.PeteYC has 3 wins and 1 tie for 1st place, SarstYC has 3 wins, MYC has 2 wins, BucYC has 2 wins, ESYC has 1 win and 1 tie and GYC has 1 win.
Congratulations are definitely in order to BWYC Commodore Chris Trapani, his BWYC Lipton Team Captain Charlie Merrigan and all the BWYC team members whose names and pictures are spread in other parts of this Jib Sheet issue.
