During the War Between the States, Union soldiers occupied the home in the Col.’s absence and forced Mrs. Lewis and her children to live in great hardship in the attic. The Greek Revival home was saved from their torch by the wit of a loyal servant who claimed he was to inherit the manor after the war. Named “Oldfields" by the William Grinsteads who purchased it in 1905, the house later became home during the 1940’s to Sissy Grinstead and her husband the artist Walter Anderson and their four small children. Once surrounded by pecan and citrus orchards the remaining 51 acres was subdivided in the 1960’s. Oldfields has been recently restored to pristine condition by the Ricardo Merlos family, who purchased the home in 1988. Oldfields is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
