The Cedars
Jackson, Mississippi’s capital city, was almost completely burned by Union General William T. Sherman during the Civil War.
The few remaining buildings have been beautifully restored, and most are open year round. In addition to those listed below, other interesting sites are antebellum City Hall and Josh Halbert Gardens, The Oaks antebellum cottage, Mynelle Gardens, the Natural Science Museum and the Jackson Zoological Park.
MISSISSIPPI ARTS FESTIVAL: The 1978 festival, April 22
through May 7, will celebrate the opening of the Mississippi Arts Center/Planetarium on Pascagoula Street in downtown Jackson. A plethora of cultural events is scheduled including symphony, ballet and opera performances, nationally-known entertainment, a folk festival and teen arts festival, seminars and much, much more, all focusing on the new arts center.
GOVERNOR’S MANSION: The nation’s oldest executive residence still in use, the Mansion was completed in 1841. The classical Greek structure contains period furnishings, and the surrounding grounds have been landscaped as in the 1840s period. The Mansion, located on Capitol Street in the heart of Jackson, is open for tour weekdays from 10 until 4 o’clock.
OLD CAPITOL MUSEUM: Built in 1833, the Old Capitol was in use until 1903. Now the State Historical Museum, the imposing building contains displays, dioramas and furnishings
relating Mississippi’s past. The museum is open year round. Admission is free.
THE CEDARS: Located in Clinton at 405 E. College Street, The Cedars is considered to be Hinds County’s oldest home and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a refined version of the dogtrot style of housing prevalent in the 1830s. Open during Pilgrimage and by appointment at other times. Telephone (601) 924-5446.
