Built in 1953, the second Bay St. Louis bridge was not only a proud engineering feat, but an enduring symbol of our community.
Hancock County residents were fond of their bridge. Fishermen could reel in a catfish or sheepshead, boaters could stare at the majestic beauty of the structure as they passed underneath, and motorists could enjoy the pleasant view of the sunshine glistening over the
placid Bay waters, as they made their trips back and forth on a daily basis.
In 1969, Hurricane Camille attempted to knock the bridge down, but Camille was only able to shift some of the sections, and within months after the storm, the bridge was back open for commuters.
However, like most things along the beach in Hancock County, the bridge did not survive August 29, 2005.
