ELMWOOD PLANTATION Situated at 902 North Beach Boulevard, Bay St. Louis, Elmwood Plantation is a long standing monument to the skills of its builders and the integrity of the materials they used; native pine and cypress. The hardware was manufactured by local craftsmen and intricate window and door treatment point to the meticulous care taken by the builders. Placing the house on the east-west axis insured excellent lighting and their version of air conditioning, as there was an ever present breeze through the long center halls. Built between 1804 and 1830, the house stands on lands owned by the Cowand family until 1852 when the property was subdivided due to the death of the patriarch, Jesse Cowand, a veteran of the Battle of New Orleans. Three of the sons served with Confederate forces in the Civil War and all are buried in the family cemetary at the rear of the property. The plantation is privately owned and not open to the public.
