THE REV* J. E. GRAY, AN ANNEX OF SIX CLASS ROOMS, WAS ERECTED ADJOINING THE CHURCH. IN 1949, THE ADJOINING PROPERTY ON THE CORNER OF MAIN AND CUE STREETS CONTAifxfG A TWO-STORY STUCCO AND FRAME BUILDING WAS PURCHASED BY THE CHURCH AND IS BEING USED AS AN EDUCATIONAL BUILDING. EPfSCOPAL CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH HAD ITS BEGINNING BEFORE ANY BUILDING WAS AVAILABLE. IT WAS THE RESULTS OF A RE90LUTI0N MADE BY MISS HATTIE CROWELL (WO CONDUCTED A DAY SCHOOL AT THAT TIME) WHEN SHE FOUND THAT NOT ONE PUPIL fN HER SCHOOL COULD TELL HER WHO JEHOVAH WAS. SHE RESOLVED THEN THAT THERE SHOULD BE A CHURCH AND IT WAS IN HER RESIDENCE THAT SERVICES WERE FIRST HELD BY THE REV. NELSON AYRES, WHO WAS THEN RECTOR OF GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH ON NICHOLSON AVENUE IN WAVELAND. THAT CHURCH WAS LATER CLOSED. IN T889, A SANCTUARY FOR CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH WAS BUILT IN WAT IS NOW THE 800 BLOCK OF NORTH BEACH. THIS LOCATION PROVED TO BE REMOTE, MAKING IT HARD FOR PARISHIONERS TO ATTEND SERVICES. IN 1904 THE PRESENT LOCATION WAS PURCHASED FROM MR. WALTER J. (TEX, SR. AND MR. CHARLES G. MOREAU. THE ORIGINAL BUILDING WAS1 MOVED EY_ROLLERS TO THE NEW LOCATION. IN LATER YEARS A PARISH HOUSE ANNEX TO THE CHURCH WAS BUILT, AND NINE YEARS AGO TH'E CHURCH BEGAN ITS MOST AMBITIOUS PROJECT - - A SCHOOL WHIO* TODAY COMPRISES KINDERGARTEN AND EIGHT GRADES. BAPTIST ACCORDING TO FRAGMENTARY EARLY RECORDS, THE FIRST BAPTIST SERMON WAS PREACHED UN BAY ST. LOUIS IN 1846 BY A REV. BENJAMIN WHITFIELD. THE FIRST CHURCH WAS CALLED ELfM OHURCH AND HAD 14 MEMBERS — 7 WHITE AND 7 BLACK. WRUNG THE CIVIL WAR THIS CHURCH WAS DISSOLVED.
