THE PRESENT BAPTIST ORGANIZATION WAS BEGUN IN 1896 AND A FRAME CHURCH WAS BUILT ON EASTERBROOK STREET. IN T947, WITH THE REV. JOHN DEAR TNG AS PASTOR, AND WITH DR. THOMAS SELLERS AS PRINCIPAL DONCflR, THE C0NGREGATFON BOUGHT A CENTRALLY LOCATED LOT AND AN ARMY CHAPEL WHICH: NOW HAS BECOME A BEAUTIFUL AND WEILL-EQUIPPED CHURCH. PRESBYTERIAN IN T95T MRS. FRED KOENIGER AND THE MISSES HILDA AND \ BARBARA SI^CK ASSEMBLED A GROUP OF PRESBYTERIANS HERE WITH THE PURPOSE OF STARTING A CHURCH. IN T952 THE GROUP BOUGHT A 3KALL WAR-SURPLUS BARRACKS WHICH' HAD BEEN CONVERTED INT(T AN ART STUDIO ON DE MONTLUZIN AVENUE AND RE-CONVERTED IT INTO AN ATTRACTI VE CHURCH WHOSE CONGREGATICETi HAS STEADILY GROWN. ITS FIRST PASTOR WAS THE REV. EDWARD WORREN. ST- MATTHEW* S LUTHERAN CHURCH - NEWEST OF THE CHURCH GROUPS UN TOWN, THE LUTHERAN CHURCH WAS ORGANIZED IN T955 AND HELD ITS FIRST SERVICE ON EASTER SUNDAY. ITS CONGREGATION IS STILL SMALL AND SO FAR IT HAS NOT ATTEMPTED TO ERECT ITS OWN CHURCH, INSTEAD HOLDING ITS SUNDAY NIGHT SERVICES IN THE PRESBYTERIAN CHUiRCH BUfLDING. ITS PASTOR FROM THE BEGINNING HAS BEBY THE REV. V. E. MORITZ, WHCT COMES FROM NEW ORLEANS TO CONDUCT THE SERVICES. EDUCATION THE FIRST SCHOOL UN BAY ST. LOUIS WAS ESTABLISHED IN T85“2 BY A CATHOLIC MISSIONARY, FATHER LOUIS STANISLAUS MARY' BUTEU'X. IT WAS A BOYS* SCHOOL WITH THREE TEACHERS AND WAS HELD IN A TWO-ROOM FR/ME BUILDING DIRECTLY BEHIND THE CHURCH. IN T856 A MU’CH LARGER BOYS* SCHOOL ACCff’Tl’NG BOTH DAY STUDENTS AND BOARDING PUPILS WAS BUILT THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF FATHER BUTEUX.
