Old ^Maryland Settlement
^March 31 *e/4pril 2 &e/4pril 7 - 9
Settled by wealthy people from the Tidewater country, the Old Maryland Settlement, now known as Church Hill, is one of the oldest communities in Mississippi. Plantation homes reflect the architectural influence of the Spanish as well as settlers from Virginia and Maryland. Church Hill area homes will be open for tour on two different weekends.
Special Attractions
Christ Episcopal Church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and site of the oldest Episcopal congregation in Mississippi, was erected in 1857. Union troops occupied the church during the Civil War, and visitors may see the collection plates battered by bayonets.
Historic Springfield Plantation, near Fayette, will be open in conjunction with the Maryland Settlement homes. Built in 1786-1790, Springfield was one of the
first great mansions in the Mississippi Valley. Perhaps the most famous occurrence at Springfield was the marriage of Andrew Jackson and Rachel Robards in August, 1791. Visitors may stand on the spot where the ceremony took place. The mansion is open year round. For group tours interested in visiting Springfield at times other than Pilgrimage, contact Historic Springfield (T), Rt. 1, Box 116, Fayette, MS 39069.
Tourists are also invited to drive through the grounds where Lt.
Col. Manuel Gayoso de Lemos’ home, Gayoso Plantation, once stood.

Four homes, including Springfield, and Christ Episcopal Church will be open from 10 o’clock until noon and from 1 until 5 o’clock each day.
