Loading supplies onto trucks at New Orleans Lakefront Airport are, from left, Robert Carlin, Donald Landry and Dan Mooney, cadets in the Civil Air Patrol. Continued From Page 17 “The cadets rendered invaluable assistance in the Civil Defense communications and message centers by linking civil defense with their own radio networks,” said Maurice C. Jauchler, communications officer of the Civil Defense emergency operations center during Camille. The CAP cadets did the same type of work during Hurricane Betsy and have participated in searches for many missing persons. They are available for any emergency. YOUNG people have become involved in cadet work through friends, publicity, and parents who were or are active in the Air Force or Civil Air Patrol. “I developed an interest from friends,” said Cadet Mark Caraway. “I had a great instructor when I joined and I liked it. Everyone in the squadron helped the recruits out, even to the extent of making us feel at ease. Being a cadet gives you the feeling of being in the military even though you aren’t.” Mark, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Caraway, Belle Chasse, La., plans to enter the Air Force or ROTC program. In a certain phase of CAP training a cadet can complete a year of ROTC. Many cadets later enter a field in some way related to aviation. Margaret Langhoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Langhoff, 8710 Heaton St., is a freshman at LSUNO majoring in mechanical engineering. Margaret feels strongly about her work with the Civil Air Patrol. “The people I’m with want to work and I want to work. I feel useful and needed. I get great satisfaction out of the cadet program.” From relieving areas in crisis to pursuing careers in aerospace, CAP cadets never stop. Perhaps William Cahill, Louisiana CAP deputy wing commander, says it best. ‘The Civil Air Patrol cadet program is definitely an example of what teens can and will do.” DIXIE, September 21, 1969
