A split level cedar home, designed by the owners, uses glass to take advantage of a view of Pine Golf Course. The grounds are landscaped with Live oaks, hosta, ferns, astilbe, hydrangea and phlox. Decks offer seating to view the golf course, garden spa and fish pond. The house features a large kitchen with hardwood floors, and opens to a cathedral ceilinged living room. A master bedroom wing includes a study and "his" and "her" dressing areas. A game room with billiard table, bar and casual seating is on the lower level. Decor includes antiques, crystal, heirlooms, paintings by local artists and family pictures. 3. GARDENS OF MRS. JULES F. ZATARAIN,6517Alakoko Drive. Mrs. Zatarain purchased this home recently and embarked on a project to renovate and rescue the gardens from several years of neglect. Many new plantings have been added and existing ones pruned and shaped. This lovely wooded garden has huge oak trees with two Live Oaks at the entrance. Asian Jasmine has been chosen as a ground cover in the heavily wooded areas. The rear garden features a tiered pond with a waterfall, a bridge spans the pond and connects to a large multilevel deck. The center of the deck was cut out to accommodate a tree, when the tree died the top was removed and replaced with a unique Amish bird feeder. 4. HOME OF MR. AND MRS. DOUG LOTTES , 640 Huko Court. This two story Acadian style home built in 1995 was designed to suit the Lottes' large family. The home sits on nearly an acre landscaped with many native tree, shrubs and over 100 azaleas. The church pew on the front porch was salvaged from an old burned church in Winchester, Virginia. The beautiful open staircase takes you up to the children's rooms. This estate overlooking Bayou Benneshewa and completed in October 1994, was designed, built and decorated by Marilyn and Joe Cuccia. The open floor plan, extensive gardens, pool, dock and outdoor kitchen reflect the owners lifestyle and love for entertaining. The contemporary original oil, "Friends" by Susan Marie was commissioned by the owners to hang in the great room. It ties the color scheme together and welcomes guests. 7. HOME AND GARDENS OF MR. AND MRS WILLIAM HOWELL, 8322 Maunalani Place. This unique 2 1/2 story custom home views Bayou Benneshewa and features an open living and dining area, wet bar, wine cellar, gourmet kitchen with a dumb waiter and a turret room. An open oak staircase leads to the second floor and the turret room. The master suite has "his" and "hers" baths, each with jacuzzi. Decor reflects the Howell's years of living and traveling abroad. Mrs. Howell's marine biology background is seen in her unusual turtle collection. After retirement the Howsons plan to spend more time enjoying this beautiful residence. The front employs the raised South Louisiana style architecture while the back, an open traditional style. The ground floor area was enclosed recently to add a second garage and the kitchen/sitting room. The style fits with the natural pines and magnolia trees on the site and affords a view of Bayou Benneshewa. The antiques were purchased in the 70's while the owners lived in Europe. 9. GARDENS OF CAPT. AND MRS. HENRY LANGE, 8454 Kimo Court. The Langen's garden has more than doubled in size and scope recently. A garden house, potting shed and many splendid plantings have been added. A trellis bridge entry and red brick pathway lead to a large patio. This area for family gatherings is appointed with a lovely fountain. A vine-covered gate leads to a path through an undeveloped area, preserved as a wildlife habitat. This four-seasons garden with a wide variety of plants gives pleasure to the owners, visitors, butterflies and birds. Most specimens of the Mississippi "natives" are labeled. BAY ST. Home of the Bay-Waveland Garden Club founded in 1938, this site is on the National Historic Register. Visit the exhibit honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Pilgrimage. 2. GARDENS OF MELINDA AND JACK RICHARD, 1320 Dunbar Ave., Bay St. Louis. Mrs. Richard, President of "Gather Ye Rosebuds" designed and planted the beautiful rose garden which contains a collection of more than 100 rose bushes. Mr. Richard designed and installed the semiformal Water Gardens and numerous waterloving plants thrive there. The wisteria covered pergola, winding paths, old garden gates, beds under planted with numerous perennial and annuals, old garden roses cascading over arbors create an innovative and charming setting for the most popular flower in the world. 3. LE MARIN, HOME OF CARTER CHURCH AND YANCY POGUE. 406 NorthBeach Blvd, Bay St. Louis overlooks the Mississippi Sound at the mouth of the Bay of St. Louis and was part of the 1817 Necaise Land Grant. During the ownership of Uriah J. Virgin extensive renovations were made to give the home features reminiscent of the Mission/Prairie style that is most evident in the windows and the dining room's englenook. The C. C. McDonald family purchased the house in 1925 and it remained in the family until 1994. After a 16 month renovation and restoration by the current owners, it was used by Hancock County Historical Society as its 1995 Decorator Show House. The home features an extensive, eclectic art collection and award winning kitchen, greatroom and beautifully landscaped gardens.
