BWYC Wins it’s 1st Junior Lipton Cup Championship in 1963 Pictured here is the first winning BWYC Junior Lipton Cup Sailing Team in 1963. From left are Walter Chamberlain, Basil Kennedy, GYA Commoodre Walter Seymour, Chuck Breath and Richard Mestayer. The regatta was hosted by Fort Walton Yacht Club (Ft.WYC) and it is said that our Junior Lipton learned how to sand ski while they were there. Not pictured here is Commodore Kenneth Pepperdene or Commodore Richard Hadden who both served as BWYC Commodore that year. Another interesting BWYC Junior Lipton Team victory came in 1979 at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club. The team consisted of young high school 10th grader Dennis Stieffel, Elizabeth Santa Cruz and Kathryn Boh as the designated skippersr. BWYC was the joke of the weekend sending under-aged Dennis down there with two girls who they quickly concluded knew little or nothing about sailing to compete in that prestigious junior sailing event. Their GYA yacht club competitors laughed and joked about it all weekend until the final results came in with BWYC winning the Junior Lipton Cup Championship that year. I believe the GYA changed the competition rules after that. BWYC Commodore Lucien Gex Jr. was in the first of his two consecutive terms as Commodore of BWYC that year.
