BAY ST. LOUIS WELCOMES VISITORS The historic town of Bay St. Louis is intriging with its unique shops, colorful history and hospitable people. When the New World explorer Pierre LeMoyne Sieur d'Iberville camped on the bluffs at the Gulf s edge in 1699, he named the site Bay St. Louis after King Louis IX. A spanish land grant to Thomas Shields in 1789 changed the town’s name to Shieldsboro but the name reverted to Bay St. Louis in 1875. Originally settled by Spaniards, French-Canadians and Indians (among others), the area has been a popular resort for New Orleanians for several generations and many have made permanent homes here. The buildings, shops and homes featured in this brochure are only an example of many that remain to give us a glimpse of Bay St. Louis's distinctive history. You are welcome to stroll around and discover them. We take pleasure in sharing our town and hope that you enjoy your visit.
