2B-THE SEA COAST ECHO—THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1994 Wooden Boat Rendezvous is Friday BY CHARLEE MARSHALL Jude Miller, an organizer of the Gulf Coast Wooden Boat Rendezvous, said there is still an opportunity for wooden boat owners to participate in the festivities Friday, Oct. 7 through Sunday, Oct. 10 at Casino Magic’s Marina. Bay St. Ijouis will celebrate the Gulf Coast’s heritage in the boat building industry with this event. Proceeds from the rendezvous will go into a building fund to extend the Kate Ix)brano House, headquarters for the Hancock County Historical Society. Invitations to participate in the rendezvous were sent out to 1,000 wooden boat owners, but the organizers feel that many more would like to share in the history and merriment, so the invitation still stands. Quite a few boats from Bay St. Louis have registered in the last few days, Miller said, however, there is still room for trail-ered boats to be displayed. He is well aware that a lot of people rebuild boats and might want to show off their expertise and swap hints about techniques they used to finish their prized possessions. Charles Gray, president of the Hancock County Historical Society, said that volunteers, vendors, exhibitors and boat owners are being asked to add to the festive atmosphere by donning costumes from the period 1800-1818. Free admission is offered to visitors who show up in costume. Swallow tail coats, fluted top hats and tight knee britches with loose-fitting seats, and any attire reminiscent of the era, will be right in tune with the activities. To make the effort a little more exciting, there will be a costume competition. Antique dealers are invited to sell marine-related antiques during the rendezvous. Marine-related attractions include boat building exhibits, vendor booth-s, arts and crafts, an auction, art contest and a model boat contest. There will also be children’s activities. Casino Magic will be supplying many mouthwatering food items, so there will be no excuse for walking around hungry. Schooner excursions aboard the Glen L. Swetman and Mike Sekul will be available and visi- tors can purchase T-shirts and posters as reminders of the occasion. Organizers want to make the Gulf Coast Wooden Boat Rendezvous the best so far and want to make sure that everyone knows the event is open to the public.
