BICKNTKNMA1, DISCOVKRY Inside the lid of an old school desk in the attic of the family home, the Ilene de Montluzins discovered in 1976 a Centennial sticker pasted there in 187(5 bv an unknown school boy. The design shows soldiers firing a Civil War cannon and waving an American flag. The colors, preserved for a hundred years in the darkness of the desk's interior, are still bright and the 1876 date still clear.
I he desk survives from :i school for boys - F.cole Commericale et Classique - established on Conti Street in New Orleans by Mr. de Montlu/.in’s grandfather just after the Civil War. Us top is nicked by penknife cuts, and its interior is stained with inkspots and decorated with tobacco stamps and pictures cut fro newspapers of the time. It now has a new life at de Montlu/.in Drug Store, where customers may sit at it and address greeting cards.
