Jourdan River Lumber Company’s Sawmill, Kiln, MS The sawmill era of Kiln began around the Civil War period with the first mill being built by Captain Sam Favre of Mobile, Ala. This is a photo of the Jourdan River Lumber Company’s Sawmill at Kiln, circa 1900, one of several which operated over the years in the busy community. The Edward Hines Lumber Company, which bought the W.W. Carre Mill after a fire in 1912, became the nation’s second largest, finest and most modern. Hines built 200 mill homes and employed more than 300 men. (Photo courtesy of J. Larry Ladner, of Kiln.) The Echo welcomes photos older than 25 years for publication. They will be returned to their owners.
