It was a pleasure to have met you the other day. Thank you for taking time out of your day so that we could finally have a face-to-face meeting.
I am attaching herewith an application for marker for Brown’s Vineyard in Waveland.
There is a great deal of local tradition about what must have been a very popular and enjoyable experience in late 19th and early 20th century Waveland. The vineyard was a place of relaxation for both locals and vacationers from Bay St. Louis. There, the Browns entertained by serving their special wines, along with food and piano music. People were
carried there by horse and wagons called “Tally Ho’s.
The Browns, whose name was initially spelled “Braun,” came from Germany through New Orleans. They had a successful business, not only in providing local entertainment, but also in marketing their wine as far away as Chicago and New York. This ended with the coming of Prohibition. There is an account of the Browns burying their excess bottles of wine, only for the “revenuers” to come along, dig them up, and break them.
At least one full bottle remains, and a gift of it was made some time ago to the Hancock County Historical Society. It has never been opened, and may be the only in-tact bottle in existence. Mr. Ray Kidd, who owns a restaurant on the land that once was the vineyard, reports that occasionally an old bottle surfaces when any digging is necessary on the premises.
I trust that this background and the accompanying attachments will justify an approval for another marker for Waveland. Mayor Longo and Mr. Kidd are excited about the prospect. Please let me hear from you should you deem any additional information is needed.
