Fathe Stanislaus Buteux is credited with inviting the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to begin a school in Bay St. Louis. Saint Staislaus College is named in honor of his patron saint, Stanislaus Kostka. The following tribute to Father Stanislaus was first printed in the November 13, 1903 edition of The Sea Coast Echo. Now in the public domain, the article is reproduced here:
FIRST CATHOLIC PRIEST OF BAY ST. LOUIS
Rev. Father Stanislaus Buteux, a Native of France, Reached Here in 1847 and Built the Church of Our Lady of the Gulf and Located Both the College and Convent.
To the Memory of Rev. Stanislaus Buteux, a tribute of gratitude and appreciation from his friend, M. W. Oliver.
__Rev. Stanislaus Buteux, the subject of this sketch, was born in the city of Paris, France, July 2, 1808. Being seriously inclined, he was early impressed by the examples and precepts of pious parents, and the desire of religious knowledge was awakened in his soul with an ardent longing to become possessed of that inheritance which fadeth not away, for God has reserved it for those who love him.

Having resolved to follow his vocation for a religious life, he entered upon a course of theological study in his native city, and such was his zeal in the pursuit of learning, that he soon outstripped all competitors and stood first in his class, not only for depth of penetration, clearness of judgment and literary acumen, but for profound piety and tender devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose aid he always invoked before entering upon any important undertaking.
^Having successfully completed his novitiate, Stanislaus Buteux was ordained priest May 28, 1836 and celebrated his first Mass the following day. From that time his life of sacrifice more fully began, for he endeavored to walk in the steps of the crucified One. Patiently obedient to the commands of Holy Church he willingly renounced home, friends and country, bidding them all farewell, to enter upon the sacred duties of a Missionary priest in the far-off wilds and sparsely-settled portions of America.
