one of Peytons's brothers as to their location. I cannot account for James Lee, Jr., the oldest brother. Rogers Lee, the second brother died in New Hanover County in 1837. Thomas Lee, the third brother died in Tomahock, N. C. 1-15-1864. Peyton Lee, the fourth son, of course moved to Hancbck County, Miss, and died in 1873. The fifth son, Frederick Lee died in infancy. So all these brothers did not move to different parts of the country. I suggest that the generation level in question was the brothers of James Lee 1757-1844 or the brothers of Bryant Lee 17??17 68. Further research might reveal additional information on this subject.
A Note About Names Successions
Do you know who you were named after? It is interesting to trace names back through ancestry.
Many given names were once family surnames. It has been a long standing tradition to name our children after our ancestral names. This is true of both given names and surnames. It was, for instance, traditional to name a child after it's mother's surname or the surname of the father's mother. Hence, James (b 1757) and Celia (Selah) Lee names a son "Rogers" which was Celia's surname. James and Celia also named a son "Thomas" which was Celia's mother's'/ Maty, surname.
Thus we find the James, Rogers, Thomas, Mary, Virginia, Rebecca, Maranda, William, Peyton (Payton) , Zackariah, Joshua, Freeman, Ann, Caroline, and many others passed on and on.
I was named after Elder Dawson Jones (uncle Doss), the first Pastor of Lee's Chapel Baptist Church Number Two. When the doctor sent in my birth registry, he spelled my name wrong. He spelled it Dosson when it should have been Dawson. As a matter of fact, for many years I spelled my first name Dawson. When I applied for a copy of my birth certificate, I discovered that the spelling was not correct as originally intended.
Through several references and charts, you might find your name going way back.
