Back Porch
Battle
by Tad Leggett
Two good-sized anole lizards were squared off sideways six inches apart on a slate ledge-two tiny leviathans in mock batde, each showing the other his most impressive aspect, looking quite fierce with the backs of their necks lifted, puffing themselves up in mutual defiance, signaling with their pink Adam’s apples flaring out the size of nickels.
They circled. One lunged sideways, and the other immediately jumped back to the edge of the slate and down behind the precipice.
The victor stood alone. But soon a small triangular lizard throat reappeared, and the vanquished one regained the platform, like a downed boxer up at the count of nine.
He squared off at the corner of the ledge, not giving an inch, poised, poised, ready, then slashed his tail at his opponent, who as quickly jumped backwards. They circled quickly, like a wheel of energy, then jumped head-on with open jaws interlocking, pushing, each testing the other’s strength.
Then, like equally successful neighbors haggling over a property line, satisfied with the established boundary, the two tiny reptiles backed away into their respective jungles in a human-tended garden at the foot of Canal Street and the Mississippi River.
