‘1 just rendered your entire argument moot,” he said. “Now, eat your half and let me read the sports page in peace.”
For once, I was struck dumb. How could he do that to me? I hadn’t exactly lost, as I still held a butchered morsel in a vise-like grip, but I couldn’t say I’d won. either. Well, he would have a hoDow victory. In what I hoped was the absolute image of insulted dignity, I rose from my chair and pushed the plate across the table.
“You might as well eat this half too,” I snapped. “I certainly wouldn't eat it now!”
With that, I turned and almost tripped over the wiry body of my tow-headed son who had apparently been listening to the whole exchange. So much for a proud exit. Gently I moved him to one side and stalked out. From the comer of my eye, I saw Robert reach up and snatch nay rejected half-piece of fudge.
“Grown-ups!” he muttered with disdain as the candy disappeared aito his mouth.
