interruptions in power and/or communications also affected the availability of real-time weather observations during Katrina. Both the emergency management and mass media communities indicated that the NWS provided excellent products and services during Katrina. However, feedback was mixed on one of the NWS’s newest products, the Extreme Tropical Cyclone Destructive Wind Warning. Outreach activities on tropical weather services should focus on this issue to educate users about this product and communicate planned future changes to its format and/or content. The NWS conducts routine service assessments to cultivate continuous performance improvement. The SAT reviewed the operations of 20 field offices to evaluate NWS performance during Katrina and gathered feedback from more than 40 members of the natural hazards community. This report provides specific recommendations and highlights best practices to be applied to NWS operations in future hazardous events.
