When was the library founded?
Anne S. Anderson came up with the idea to have a genealogical library in 1982 and The L. W. Anderson Genealogical Library opened it's doors to the public in February 1983.
Where does the library get its name?
The library was named in honor of Ms Anderson's grandmother, Lulu Williams Anderson.
Why was the library founded?
Anne S. Anderson noticed in doing research in the deep south, there was not a source for materials outside the local area, i. e. southern LA, MS and AL. The Library's purpose is to make available to geanealogical researchers materials from as many states and countries as possible. The Library has continued to grow in that vein with source materials representing 34 states and several foreign countries. Our collection is home to numerous volumes and rolls of microforms.
How is the facility funded?
The library is funded by the Anderson family with the major contributor being Mrs. Vassar (Lulu W.) Anderson. Additional money comes from the $2.00 daily entrance fee the library charges patrons as well as the fees charged for copies. Donations are accepted.
What does the library do to promote local genealogical awareness? The L. W. Anderson library has sponsored genealogical seminars since 1983. In an endeavor to promote the local area and bring genealogical education to the coast, The L. W. Anderson library served as local host to the National Genealogical Society Conference in the States 1988, which brought roughly 1300 people to the coast.
How many patrons use the library over the course of a month? Are
they all local?
The library is open three days a week and is visited by over 50 people each month. [The Library opens by appointment for groups of patrons on other days.] While we do have a local following, genealogists from as far away as California, New Mexico, Washington, Alaska, Michigan, Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut have used our facility.
Is the library non-profit?
Yes, the Library is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit entity. Additional information can be supplied if necessary.
What is the present location of	the collection?
We are currently located	on the campus of	William	Carey
College on the Coast in a	building containing	roughly	1800
