(b) General Public The completed questionnaires listed: historic quality of the City; the mix of retail/antique stores; restaurants; beach areas; charter fishing/boat facilities; recreation and golf centers. Future improvements that were suggested included: • Create pedestrian areas within downtown. • Upgrade beaches • Improve landscaping along entry roads to downtown. • Establish artist colony to support growing gallery uses. • Coordinate tourist advertising program. Question 9: In what way can downtown stores and other City businesses benefit from the dockside gaming sites? (a) Round Table Although it was acknowledged that businesses in the City will obviously benefit from the potential large increase in visitors due to gaming, there were doubts expressed about the real extent of benefits that could occur. The following was noted: • A percentage of players at gaming sites will not be interested in visiting downtown stores, antique centers, etc. • Potential traffic congestion could make access to stores difficult. • Gaming sites are likely to develop their own retail/restaurant and hotel facilities which would hurt existing businesses. (b) General Public 20 questionnaires noted that existing businesses were unlikely to benefit (for the reasons noted above). Suggestions to achieve greater economic benefits for the City's commercial areas included: • Limit supporting uses (e.g. stores) at gaming sites. • Allow at least one gaming site in the downtown area. • Give locate entrepreneurs the opportunity for concessions at gaming sites. 6
