Hancock County Historical Society picnics in Logtown
The Hancock County Historical Society Wednesday hosted its spring picnic at the site of historic Logtown.
A large turnout of in embers and guests met in downtown Bay St. Louis and formed a caravan of cars decorated with red and white streamers.
The procession went first to the Pearlington Cemetery where M~s. Pat Wilson conducted a brief tour of the grounds.
At Logtown the sites of over sixty homes, churches and businesses had been marked by signs and in many cases, foundations or steps and flowering plants remained.
Each guest was given a small book on the history of Logtown from 1788 which listed the locations of the buildings in order moving eastward from the river.
Logtown was a sawmill town located on the Pearl River about ten miles north of the Gulf.
In 1848, Henry Weston began an operation that was to become the largest sawmill in the world before it ceased operation in 1930.
In 1964 the lastremairinghomes in Logtown were torn down or moved from the buffer zone when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration facility was built. Only the cemetery remains.
Under a large tree named the Otis Oak at the Logtown Cemetery a sumptuous picnic was spread and Roy Baxter of Pearlington entertained the party with tales of social customs, parties, the mill and the every-day life that existed in Logtown until 1964.
Under the leadership of Charles Gray, the society’s president, the well-organized outing combined an historical review of this area and a party atmosphere prevailed at the picnic luncheon.
Several older members of the area who attended added interesting points of information not readily kn^v.n to the public. Everyone agreed a great time was enjoyed at this historical adventure.
