5. James “Lott” McArthur - according to his headstone in Turtleskin Cemetery, he was born on February 25, 1873 and died on February 14, 1960. He married Mary Louise Wheat and lived in the Flat Top community of Hancock County. They had one daughter called Jessie who married Frederick W. “Fred” Schaller and lived in New Orleans, LA. She died two years after her marriage and had no children. 6. Elizabeth Matilda “Lizzie” McArthur - according to her grave in Turtleskin Cemetery, she was born on May 1, 1875 and died on January 6, 1945. She lived in the Flat Top community and married William Everett Thigpen on January 9, 1896. They had: a. Lillie Thigpen - born September 23, 1897 according to her sister Lula. She said that Lillie died as an infant on March 9, 1898. b. Tenia Thigpen - born September 21, 1899 and died March 8, 1976. She never married and lived in Picayune, MS. c. Obeda M. “Beady” Thigpen - bom on October 27, 1901. She married Ellis Mitchell, and lived in Picayune, MS with her family. They had: 1) Ada Mitchell - married Clifford Danby and lived in New Orleans, LA. 2) Ida Mitchell - married N. H. Martinez and lived in New Orleans, LA. 3) William Everett “Ebb” Mitchell - married Jane Ann Dill and lived in Carrier, MS. 4) Betty Lou Mitchell - married Ronald Dufour and lived in New Orleans, LA. 5) Ira Lee Mitchell - married Alice Darby and lived in Nicholson, MS. 6) Willie Mitchell - never married and lived in Picayune, MS. d. Lula B. Thigpen - bom November 17, 1904. She lived in the Standard community of Hancock County and married Thornton A. Brown (see our Robert Brown History for his ancestors). They had no children. She was a very nice lady and was most helpful in the Brown and McArthur research. She will always be remembered for her efforts. e. William J. Thigpen - bom January 1, 1906, married Beulah Smith, and lived near Picayune. They had one daughter called Shirley that married Donald Munson and lives in Hollywood, Florida. 7. Mary Keziah McArthur - according to her headstone in Bayou La Croix Cemetery, she was bom on February 20, 1877 and died on October 5, 1928. She appears in the 1880 Hancock County census as age 3, living with parents, brothers, and sisters. Mary was bom, as the rest of her brothers and sisters, in the Gainesville, MS community. While still a small child, her family moved to the Hickory Creek community of central Hancock County. It was not until her marriage that she moved to the Bayou La Croix community where she lived until her death. Mary, according to her daughter, Velma A. Zengarling Heitzmann (Jerry’s mother), completed the third grade at the old Hickory Creek Public School. With a minimal formal education, she continued to educate herself and was considered a very intelligent woman. She was a kind and hardworking mother that always had time for her children. Mary loved flowers and the things nature had to offer. She kept her house immaculate and the yard well-groomed. 16
