Piernas, Louis. Postmaster saved mail from doomed building the night of the Hurricane of 1 Oct. 1893. (Daily Picayune) Temporary building used connected to Evans Drug Store.
Louis J. Perinas (a black) was appointed postmaster by John Wanamaker under Pres. Harrison's administration. The post office was then located on the beach opposite property of Mrs. George Planchet. Although he was removed from the post during the administration of Grover Cleveland (D) he was reappointed when McKinley (R) was elected. He was removed under the Grover Cleveland (D) comeback and reappointed under Teddy Roosevelt (R) in 1902 and again in 1906. Postmaster May 1898 - March 1911 (VF)
