indications, he was an only child, (as all records after 1850 indicate) which was rare in those days. If a couple could not have children, they often adopted a child from within the local community, and that is a strong possibility in the case of this Myres family.
While we are sure this "Indian connection" is true to some degree, we have yet to find proof of this. There are some clues as in his Civil War Records where he is described as having "black hair, black eyes, and dark skin". Grandma Woodward also described her grandfather as positively having Indian features such as dark complexion, high cheek bones, dark eyes, etc. If this Indian heritage is accurate, it will be up to some other researcher to determine. Grandma also told us that she never heard her grandfather, Isaac Myres, Jr., talk of any siblings, uncles, aunts, or cousins on his side of the family. She assumed he had no living relatives.
Parents of Isaac Myres, Jr.
Isaac Myres Jr.'s father was Isaac Myres, 2nd and he was born around 1790, probably in Rensselaer Co., NY based on information from various New York censuses. From the Civil War Records on his son, Isaac, we know he (Isaac Jr.) was born in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co., NY. The family moved to Stillwater in Saratoga Co. around 1845 which is only a few miles from Schaghticoke, but in different counties. This move date is based on information in the 1855 State Census of Stillwater.
In the 1850 census, Isaac Myres Jr's father is listed as "Isaac Myers, 2nd," age 60, and a laborer, with his wife, Elizabeth, age 57, and son "Isaac Myers, Jr.", age 16. In 1870, "Isaac and Elizabeth Myars" are living in Stillwater and their son, "Isaac Myers" is living with a different family in Stillwater. This is the last census we find Isaac Myres 2nd, while their son, Isaac, Jr. and his mother appears in the 1875 NY State Census. Isaac Myres 2nd, was absent from the census, indicating he probably died between 1870 and 1875. In the Stillwater Union Cemetery, we find the grave of Isaac Myers, died March 2, 1872 at 83 years (1789).
In 2008, we had someone check for the headstone, and they said it was there, but broken and lying on the ground. This is no doubt our Isaac Myres, 2nd. While the name Isaac Myres, 2nd implies he was the son of an Isaac Myres, it could also mean he used the 2nd to distinguish himself from another, probably a little older, Isaac Myres that also lived in the area. It was a simple way to keep the two Isaac Myres from being confused. We have seen this being used in other family lines that we have researched before. Keep in mind that the 1820 census of Schaghticoke has two Isaac Myres - ours with "2nd on his name and another with no suffix listed. Ours has the oldest male as age, 16-28, and the other has a male between age, 26-45. This "other" Isaac Myers family and their descendants are found in various Stillwater censuses. To add to the confusion, we find "John Myers", age 67 and wife, Hester, listed in the 1850 Stillwater Census.
Also in the 1850 Stillwater Census, we have Isaac Myres, age 67, wife, Mary and eight others in the household. In the nearby town of Day, NY in 1850,
