Crossing the Bay of St. Louis prior to 1920 was only possible by boat, swimming or the L&N Railroad bridge.
According to the Archives of The Sea Coast Echo, in the issue of January 31, 1920,
"John Anderson, well known in Bay St. Louis as builder of the seawall in front of the city, was here (Bay St. Louis) yesterday in interest of a proposed ferry for passenger and automobiles across the Bay of St. Louis."
Mr. Anderson's proposal was to run a ferry across at frequent intervals as the traffic will justify, carrying eight automobiles on every trip. He also intended to
appear before the Hancock and Harrison County Board of Supervisors the next Monday to secure the proper privilege.
It was reported that the ferry to be used was in operation at Morgan City "and it is large and power-
ful and a safe boat."
