Strath Guardian Continued from Page 3 ner was awarded the trophy, a nine-minute narrated video presentation showed the various projects in progress Giattina told delegates he is sometimes so involved in the details of the Gulf of Mexico Program that he loses sight of what must happen to make it work. "The more people understand about the environment, the more effective a program is," said Giattina. He said the projects being recognized at the luncheon represented the cooperative efforts of the private and public sectors. Giattina said the Guardian of the Gulf Awards were developed to recognize innovation and concerted efforts to preserve and enhance the Gulf of Mexico, which flows through the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. "You're making a little bit of history," he told the groups that were recognized. "You are truly trail blazers in helping the country to protect the Gulf of Mexico." Giattina said the awards recognize the fact that, "everyday, ordinary people take extraordinary efforts to protect the Gulf. Their work will leave behind a legacy of environmental stewardship that will benefit generations to come." District 3 Supervisor Lisa Cowand, who serves as vice-president of Hancock County's Board of Supervisors, said the award recognizes the fact that, "We in Hancock County recognize the importance of a healthy environment which directly affects our quality of life and the sustainability of a growing, progressive community." She said the success of Hancock's sewerage program was also due to funding and cooperation from various agencies, including the Rural Development Administration, Mississippi's Department of Marine Resources, Department of Environmental Quality and others.
