ANNOUNCEMENT
Enclosed is a major statement about America's historic preservation movement by Chris T. Delaporte, director of the Department of the Interior's new Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service. The address was delivered to the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers, which convened in Washington, D.C. in late February.
Fully acknowledging preservation's past and present contributions to the Nation's social and economic development, Mr. Delaporte calls on the preservation movement, now come of age, to examine itself, "smooth out rough edges...and get on the fast track." He suggests issues that preservationists should confront squarely and announces an initiative that the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service will take to stimulate reassessment at an important juncture in the movement's evolution and to provide a clearer direction for policy development.
