CORINNE and ANDRE
Corinne followed Martin in birth. Uncle Martin often spoke of his love for her and his protective attitude toward her in childhood. He told a story of a grammar school teacher making Corinne cry. Uncle Martin took Corinne by the hand and left the school. Our grandfather returned to confront the teacher. We do not know the offense. Teen told me that on Corinne's deathbed the attending physician stated,"I've done all that I can do here.
I'm needed elsewhere." He attempted to leave when Uncle Martin went into an outrage. The doctor remained until her death.
Corinne graduated from Bay St. Louis High School in 1915
and gave a commencement address------ Gloria and I have a copy of
her speech. One of her classmates was Andre Trawick, her future husband. I have never heard a story of them being friends or dating in high school. I understand Daddy left Bay St. Louis after high school and went to L.S.U. Corinne worked for the Gulf Refinery Co. as a clerk in the Maison Blanche building. It was on Canal Street that one day they saw each other, became reacguainted and subseguently married. Apparently the marriage was done quietly without the approval of the families. Elvie told me that they had been married secretly. My Aunt Helen Trawick has often related the story of her driving her parents to call on the Blanchards and were rebuffed. I do not know if this is true, but have heard the same story several times with the facts the same, so it may be true. Apparently the most egregious offense was that they were married in the Catholic Church. I understand that my grandfather Trawick was stubbornly Anti-Catholic. But, he must have had a change of heart as after my grandmother Trawick died he took a second wife in the Catholic Church. By 1926 when Gloria was born the families had reconciled and Daddy became the surrogate father to his three sisters. We enjoy to this date a loving relationship with them. Gloria was the first Trawick grandchild.
I'm not sure how the Blanchards got to Bay St. Louis and will leave that story to an older grandchild. But, I know the
