Saint Stanislaus College Page 3 of 3 Bay to lay the foundation of the first Catholic school in 1855, of those three pioneers Brother Athanasius alone remains. _The Sisters of St. Joseph, under the auspices of Father Buteux, were established about the same time, though like the Brothers, in a very small way. But now behold the result! _The small seed took root in generous soil, where it was nourished and grew slowly, silently. After nearly half a century the great oak spreads its gigantic arms to sun and storm, sheltering and adoring the college grounds, which the late Captain Hiern donated to the Brothers. How nobly they have labored the institution of St. Stanislaus attests, as it stands a proud monument of successful achievement. __And what incalculable blessing have the college and convent afforded not only to resident families of the Bay, but to other households both far and wide, over the length and breadth of our land whose children have enjoyed the supreme privilege of the Brothers and Sisters' instruction. _.After 13 years of pastorate at Bay St. Louis, father Buteux resigned his position as priest of Our Lady of the Gulf into the hands of the deeply-lamented Very Rev. Father Henry Leduc. ?Father Buteux made two pilgrimages to the Holy Land and said Mass in the Sepulchre of Our Lord at Jerusalem. _After an absence of four years, he returned to the city of Boston in 1864, and was appointed by Bishop Williams chaplain of the Carney Hospital, an institution similar to Hotel Dieu of New Orleans and kept by the Sisters of Charity. There he remained faithfully performing his priestly duties until the year 1875, June 14th, when he heard the summons, "Come ye, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundations of the world," and thus he sweetly entered into rest. _The mortal remains of Rev. Stanislaus Buteux repose in St. Mary's Cemetery, South Boston, a walled enclosure, consecrated to the interment of priests and religious exclusively. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labors and their works do follow them." Each week during the 2003-2004 school year, the SSC website will host a feature story highlighting a person, group of people, or event from the school's 150 year history.
