seen between Minden and Ruston, and the journey eastward from Monroe takes one through some of the richest farming lands of the South. The Mississippi River at Vicksburg is crossed via highway bridge.
U. S. Highway No. 190
Entering Louisiana from Mississippi on U. S. Highway No. 190, the tourist passes through Slidell, the gateway to points of interest in St. Tammany parish, thence to Man-deville, on Lake Pontchartrain. There is a famous lake-shore summer resort, seawall and bathing beaches, public bathhouses, motorboating, yachting, salt water fishing, lake fishing and crabbing in summer. North of this place is Covington, interior summer resort situated on beautiful Bogue Falaya river and near Tchefuncta river. Numerous public bathing beaches, camping sites and swimming holes are along the river. From Covington, the tourist travels westward through Hammond, thence to Baton Rouge.
Route No. 190 continues from Baton Rouge westward through Port Allen, Port Barre and Opelousas, once the capitol of the state, thence to Eunice, DeQuincy and Starks, into Texas.
A route with which the tourist would be pleased is to New Roads, turning northward on State Highway No. 93, 19 miles west of Baton Rouge on U. S. No. 190. New Roads is located on beautiful False River, where there is excellent fishing. The tourist might continue northward on State Highway No. 30 to Batchelor, near Old River, where there is excellent fishing; thence across the Atchafalaya River at Simmesport, through Moreauville, Mansura, Marksville, and into Alexandria on State Route No. 5.
U. S. Highway No. 90
Another of the very important thoroughfares across Louisiana is U. S. No. 90, from Orange, Tex., through New Orleans to Pearlington, near the Mississippi line. This highway, known as the Old Spanish Trail provides the tourist with some of the most picturesque scenes to
