Establishing tke Maritime Museum in the old Carnegie Library building in Gulfport kas two purposesnPreservation and Education. To preserve tkis dedicated educational building for tke purpose of estaklisking tkerein an educational museum is appropriate. As an outstanding example of period arckitecture, tke building would, in essence, become tbe premier artifact in and of itself. What better function could a vacant, historic, educationally oriented building serve, tban a museumna tangible part of our pastnkousing tke kistory of it's own era.
as this will he a permanent feature of the photographic exhibit of the Maritime Museum.
o	ur Maritime Museum will limit its acquisitions to artifacts and materials bearing on tke kistory of the Mississippi Sound with primary emphasis on 1880-1950. Synoptic displays of earlier periods will place our targeted era in history, and events of national significance will be included.
Thematic emphasis will be on the development of coastal populations, the geography and natural resources that led to communities, early tourism, the timber industry, and the railroad created to support tke river industry, Also, tke resultant boat and shipbuilding, the seafood industry, international timber trade and shipping industry, that created the need for a deep water port, and tke port development. Also exki bited will be wartime port use, our Navy/Seabee Base, and the growth of all Mississippi Sound communities from Bay St. Louis to Moss Point.
Emphasis will be place on individuals prominent in these areas of endeavor, as well as other industries (naval stores, charcoal) and agriculture tkat depended on tke maritime geograpky and natural resources of our area. Prominent individuals in supporting roles of transportation, electricity, communications, banking, commerce and government will complete tke story tke museum tells.
