Historian Stephen Ambrose was honored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison May 9 when he received a Distinguished Alumni Award.
The single highest honor bestowed by the Wisconsin Alumni Association, the award acknowledges Ambrose for his contributions to the field of history and to the university.

This former Badger linebacker i has been a professor and the director of the Eisenhower Center at the University of New Orleans, and the president of the National D-Day Museum. His compilation of 1,400 oral histo-I ries from American veterans has established him as one of ' the foremost historians of the Second World War.
Last fall, Ambrose returned to Madison to teach history at the university. Now he is organizing a campaign to establish a chair in the department of history named for the late UW Pro- . fessor William Hesseltine, who inspired Ambrose to study history in the first place.
The Wisconsin Alumni Association (WAA) has been serving 1 UW-Madison and its graduates ) for 136 years.
