chitect Samuel Sloan constructed the imposing Longwood in Natchez. Adding a second story to Ventress’s house, LaGrange, Sloan molded it into a classic Greek Revival showplace. The mounting tension between Southerners and Sloan’s northern labor force burst into open hostility in 1860, but not before the six Corinthian columns had been fashioned and the broad hipped roof covered the welcoming veranda. Like Malmaison, LaGrange was lost to fire, but two of those huge columns stand today in mute testimony to the grandeur of that home.
The Civil War brought the era of palatial homebuilding to an abrupt end.
Just up the road, in fabled Natchez, cotton was the money machine that paid for many of the mansions pilgrimage-goers enjoy today. By the mid 1850s, hardly a month passed that didn’t find the finishing touches being applied to yet another palace of a planter. But out on Liberty Road, Windy Hill Manor had already weathered a half-century of Mississippi’s turbulent history. Built in the very earliest years of the ninenteenth century, Windy Hill was a gracious story-and-a-half structure with a windowed portico supported by four massive Tuscan columns. Mossdraped oaks and a bayou surrounded the home, completing a scene of cool serenity. Its history, however, was anything but calm. Revolutionary War veteran Benjamin Osmun had constructed his house in this peaceful setting, and
