THE MISSISSIPPI ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT The Mississippi Army Ammunition Plant is the first ammunition plant to be built by the Army in more than 25 years. The new plant will be located on the northern portion of NASA's National Space Technology Laboratories facility and will consist of three separate manufacturing complexes; the Projectile metal parts area, the Cargo metal parts area, and the Load, Assemble and Pack area, plus support and administrative facilities. The plant will employ the most modern advances in manufacturing methods and technology to fully integrate all steps of projectile manufacture in one location. The plant is designed to be capable of producing 120,000 packaged rounds of the 155mm M483A1 projectile per month. This will contribute significantly to the Army's capability to meet mobilization requirements for this new type of artillery shell. Construction and equipping of this important new facility will take place over the next five years. Overall development and management of the project is the responsibilty of the Army's Project Manager for Munitions Production Base Modernization and Expansion. The Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for plant construction which will be accomplished under contracts by commercial construction firms. Mason Chamberlain, Incorporated will integrate construction and equipment purchase and installation activities to provide efficient, smooth running production lines. When completed, the plant will be under operational control of Army Armament Materiel Readiness Command and operated by a commercial contractor.
