//'// ** C.RC.TbOft' HANCOCK COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY - CEDAR REST CEMETERY EVENT Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is George Arbo. I have the only chiseled wood headstone in the graveyard. I had one made for my wife, Mary, but as you can see, it rotted at the base and fell down and is gone. You may have guessed that I was in the sawmill business - the Arbo Saw Mill Co. located on Bayou Glary. That Bayou has been renamed . It's a good location for a sawmill. The logs are floated in the bayou right up to the receiving chute of the mill and when they are milled we're ready to load on the spur track of the L&N railroad and ship. We keep 2 gangs going day and night to supply our customers. We have a planer and we specialize in tongue and groove lumber. Most of our lumber is long leaf pine but as you can see, my headstone is cypress. We handle all types of wood. We added a brick yard to the business last year. I also run a general merchandise store in the center of town. I learned the lumber business in Canada where I came from. It takes longer to grow trees in cold country than it does here. Pine trees are ready for market in 3 years. So, that's why I settled here. I hope that somebody who loves wood work will brace my headstone so that when it rots out it will not be thrown away. It is a beautiful piece of wood. It is 86 years old ; I myself was 62 when I died; the wood is older than I was.
