FHR-8-700A C1 l/78'l UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR HERITAGE CONSERVATION AND RECREATION SERVICE FOR HCRS USE ONLY RECEIVED NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES INVENTORY - NOMINATION FORM DATE ENTERED. CONTINUATION SHEET ITEM NUMBER ? PAGE 68 7 - DESCRIPTION Elmwood Historic District The Elmwood Historic District contains ten residential structures oriented toward St. Louis Bay and arranged linearly south to north on the west side of North Beach Boulevard. The focal point of the district is Elmwood Manor, the only brick two-and-a-half-story building and the most northerly structure in the district. With the exception of one modern two-story dwelling, all others are one-story frame structures and most display hip roofs and undercut galleries. TWo buildings, Elmwood Manor and the Kimbrough House (806 N. Beach Blvd.), date from the early 1800s, although the latter was remodeled at the turn of the century. Four other houses date roughly from the turn of the century. Two small-, structures, tjje Blomberg Cottage (810 N. Beach Blvd.) and the Roth House (818 N. Beach Blvd.), are thought to be remodeled (ca. 1935) outbuildings from larger estates formerly located on these lots. One house (814 N. Beach Blvd.) was originally a dependency for anp-ffier (816 N. Beach Blvd.) and was located behind it. Although contiguous, lots are separated from one another by landscaping so that the two modern houses in the district do not seem obtrusive. This is particularly true of the Hooper House (804 N. Beach Blvd.), which is well designed and blends attractively into its wooded lot. Stylistically, most older houses, with the exception of Elmwood Manor, which is French Colonial, reflect the eclecticism of the turn of the century. tompavtooe tn terms of matervau ana some.
