Register” at the State Archives in Goteborg, Sweden (D1C: 22 AR/NR: 1836: 00117). These details will be covered shortly. Surnames in Sweden are passed down in an unusual way. To better understand, we will use an explanation given by Lorna Schindler: Surname differences are due to the patronymic naming system used in Sweden. The children took on either the fathers first name = Mathias would be Matsson = Mat’s son. A daughter would be Mat’s dotter = Matsdotter for their surname, or if the mothers family was of a higher station in life, they would take on the mother’s last name or family name. As the children grew older and moved on, they could pick a surname for themselves to carry on in their family. In listing this family, we will use this method for the surnames. Swedish names are found in a variety of spellings. When dealing with the families in Sweden, we will use the “propef ’ spelling wherever possible. From the above sources, we have learned: Matthias Matthias son Lundgren - he was born on the family farm “Lunderhage,” town of Fleringe, Province of Gotland, Sweden on April 5, 1813. He was the son of: Matthias Matthiasson - he was born in 1785 in Fleringe and died around 1851 in Fleringe. He was the son of: Matthias Dinesson - he was bom in 1744 in Gerungs, Rute, Gotland and died on April 27, 1805, in Lilia Valla, Rute, Gotland. He was the son of: Dines Olofsson - he died in 1744 and married Elin Larsdotter. She was bom in Vastrume, Rute, Gotland and died in 1752. Anna Larsdotter — she was the wife of Matthias Matthiasson. She was bom in 1784 in Kauparve, Rute, Gotland and died on April 13, 1868, in Fleringe, Gotland, Sweden. Engela Larsdotter - she was the wife of Matthias Dinesson. She died in 1808 in Lilia Valla, Rute, Gotland. See paragraph below. With reference to the above Matthias Matthiasson, some internet sources have him bom in Rute, Malanje, Angola (Africa), son of Matthias Dinesson and Catarina Jacobsdotter. Catarina was born in 1764 and died in 1808, daughter of Jacob Andersson and Christina Pehrsdotter. None of the submitters gave a source for their information. It should be noted that Nina Ringbon, a Lundgren descendant, also gave Catarina Jacobsdotter as the wife of Matthias Dinesson. Other sources show Matthias Dinesson’s wife as Engela Larsdotter. Something is obviously wrong, and we will let someone else resolve this issue. 2
