Dr. John Artemus Mead worked as a physician for Tatum Lumbar Company from the time he moved to Hattiesburg in September 1928 until his death in 1947. He was the son of Dr. John Ames Mead of Portland, Maine and Woborn, Massachusetts and Abigail Russ Mead, the daughter of Dr. Steven Mead who was already living in Logtown. Abigail Mead was the sister of Lois Mead Weston, the wife of Mr. Henry Weston, founder of Weston Lumber Company in Logtown, Mississippi.
Mr. Henry Weston was a partner of Mr. Eads Poitivent in the lumber business in Gainesville, Mississippi, the county seat of Hancock County, Mississippi. When their operation in Gainesville closed, Mr. Weston established H.L. Weston Lumber Company in Logtown. Mr. Poitivent established Poitivent-LeFavre Lumber Company in Pearlington, Mississippi. They remained friends throughout their lives.
Dr. John Artemus Mead of Hattiesburg was thus the son and grandson of Dr. Mead who practiced in Logtown. Dr. John Ames Mead was a graduate of Amherst College and later Harvard Medical School after serving in the Union army in the Civil War. Dr. John Artemus Mead, his son, was educated in the public schools of Logtown, Tulane Business College and Tulane University, and graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1914. Dr. Mead worked at Weston Lumber Company throughout his educational years. He returned to Logtown as company physician for Weston Lumber Company after graduating from Vanderbilt Medical School. He was married to Sallie Thames of Magee, Mississippi in 1911. They had six children, five daughters and one son, all of whom were raised in Hattiesburg. Sallie Thames met Dr. Mead in Logtown while she was touring with the Chittauque Festival. She was a graduate of Shorter College, Georgia and the Chicago Conservatory in music.
