One time someone killed two of the hogs on the bank of the bayou and left everything there for Manual and Walter to find. One night someone took some of our meat out of the salt box and Papa had to put a lock on it.
One time Aunt Maude and me (Ann) made blouses for Lena and Verdlee and Merle just alike.
They were always around too, Aunt Maude and Uncle Francis. I don?t remember when my mama died but I do remember when Grandma and Papa died and all the rest of them.
One time when the boys were little, Lawrence and Comelious Lind came and brought a string, a bucket and some meat. They went in the woods and caught crawfish and brought them back and they boiled them.
When I was little I had lots of friends, they would come and play, Ora Nona Williams, Ira Nelson & Ruby were younger than I was. A family with the last name Ervins and there was a bunch of children moved across the bayou. Uncle Luther married one of the girls. But that didn?t last long.
Mrs. Sedonia MaufTrays lived behind Everita?s house. She had three children. Everett got killed, one became a nun and the other got married and moved away. She had cows. She would bring us milk and butter all the time. Herbert was sick every time he had milk he threw up. We always had a lot of cows also. Orvis would go stay with her at night she was scared to death to be by herself after her son got killed. She slept with an ax at the head of her bed.
Aunt Gen used to have a little black lady down there. She was crazy, George, Herbert and Lena was scared to death of her. When they would see her coming they would run inside and lock the doors. Orvis would take her by her hand and walk her back down to Aunt Gens or Mrs. Sedonia because she was really crazy and would get lost.
When we first took out burial insurance from McDonalds in Picayune we paid .25 for eight of us a month. Walter and Manuel got married so they took them off. ?When the boys went to the service, they took them off and the gjrls got married and that just left me. I paid them a lot of money all these years. But I?m glad I had it to pay. Mine is all paid for.?
I bought Mama and Papa a new head stone and we all had them cover with cement. We were not able to clean them any more.
?I don?t know if Mama and Papa had any kind of Arthritis back then or what they had wrong. There was no way of knowing what was wrong with them. I don?t know why I?m so crippled up. I guess maybe it was all the hard work I had to do, or what??
