Biloxi Public Schools are recognized in 193*+ as one of the most progressive school systems in Mississippi, but until 1912 the city had not built a public school vith public funds.
Donated Schools
Up to that time patriotic citizens had donated grounds and buildings. These included:
A $7,000 High.-JiC.hool on southwest corner of x-vain^and Railroad Streets donated by Harry_T.~-Ho\^ard and Frank Hovard in 1836V
West End School. Porter Avenue, a gift from Mr. and Mrs. L.
Lojjez, Sr., cost £^,000, erected in lS9oj
Hovard No. 1, Main and Jackson Streets, cost £3500, given by Harry T. Hovard in 1898s
Howard.fto.^2 - East Hovard Avenue, built in 1.893 on ground given by Joe <an<T“john Ott, building being given by Harry T. Hovard, cost

Biloxi City Bond Issue Schools
The nev High School on East Hovard Avenue, vhlch vas the first school built by.«a,..city bond issue, yas erected in.J.9i?_J?n ground~donnt< for"'school~ purposes by the Hqya?.d_,fap)i.ly, the building" costing $50,000 enlarged in 1917 at a cost of £22,000;
north is the athletic field equipped with lights for nieht games; the gymnasium built in 1928 costing $20,000 in which indoor gsmes are played.
Lopez School, to fce used in place of V.'est End School;
Dukate School to meet the needs of the East1Howard Avenue section Gorenflo School, Lameuse Street, to be used instead of Back Bay S were built by a $200,000 bond issue about equally divided which provided building ana equipment, these being erected in 192*+.
Present Howard No. 2 School cost £83,000 and was built on the site of the frame school in 1928.
Howard No. 1, the only frame ward school now in U'-e in 1°^ though tuilt in 1393 has teen renovated1 and Is in fins condition!
