THE NEED: Retaining Walter Anderson’s works in a semblance of wholeness, at the spot where the greater part of his creative works originated, offers an unusual opportunity particularly for scholars. There is a need for one place to: collect, protect, conserve and exhibit his art. A museum is the answer. There is a need for a place where other artists may exhibit their works. A museum is the answer. There is a need for a teaching and educational program enhancing the enjoyment and enrichment of life. A museum is the answer. Walter Anderson said, “A museum without the grace of teaching is a place of death.” THE PLAN: The proposed museum will be a “vital, sustaining center for the encouragement, development and the continuance of the Arts.” Specifically it will provide: ★ facilities for exhibition, storage and study of Walter Anderson’s works, as the core of the museum and its collection ★ a functional link and physical connection between the murals depicting the history of Ocean Springs entitled, “Seven Climates of The Coastal Areas” painted in 1950- 1951 on the Community Center walls and “Creation at Sunrise” found in the little room ★ a permanent place for exhibiting the WPA murals done in 1935 upon the walls of the old high school auditorium ★ facilities to exhibit contextually related works of the Anderson-Shearwater family; of local and regional works deemed appropriate to museum hanging; and for temporary exhibit of traveling works ★ a library, a reference center and archives for scholarly and educational research ★ a facility for educational activities: Lectures Art classes and workshops Slide talks Films and Tours Interdisciplinary focus
