19 March 1997 Dear Mr. Guerin:
I hope you have not decided that I have abandoned you. It has been one-darned-thing-after-another season here. Problems with the fabric manufacturer; trouble with the wallpaper; even more trouble with the wallpaper hangers; short vacation to Asheville; short bout of the spring flu that decimates the office annually. But you've heard variations on these excuses before. Mainly I want to assure you that I am not ignoring your request.
Here are the letters I promised. I think they establish beyond doubt that the house was rebuilt on the same site as occupied by the one that burned. The sequence of letters shows that Sarah Jackson does not seem to be established at the Russ place until July 1859. The letter of that date leads one to believe that she is more or less living at both places. She appears to be gone from Mississippi at the end of the year, and when the correspondence resumes July 16, 1860, she uses "Sea Song" in the dateline regularly.
I think you can see from these letters and others how I was led to believe that the house was right in the community of Bay St. Louis. They appear to be quite surrounded by neighbors and have some amenities of town life, even though lacking a church. I hope your archaeologist can help with this.
It has been a pleasure to swap information with you. You've been one of the fastest and best researchers I've worked with in a long time. Your map research was a real breakthrough. Please keep in touch and share your conclusions with me. I'll keep pressing on with the correspondence, although I believe I have transcribed all there is for this period.
