An institution here - Mauffra
by Grace Gibson
Joseph C. Mauffray bought a Bay St. Louis dry goods business, as well as the building on Beach Blvd. in which the store was located, in 1903. Two years later he opened a hardware store.
The two businesses, Joseph O. Mauffray's Hardware and Joseph O. Mauffray?s Dry Goods, were located under one roof with three doors connecting them.
Alden L. Mauffray purchased the hardware business from his father on February 17, 1937, and two years later the connecting doors were closed for good, separating the two stores.
The name was simplified and Mauffray?s Hardware became a well-establsihed local institution.
Then Hurricane Camille arrived, wreaking her savage destruction. Pictures in newspapers following August 1969, show, however that although the demolished windows had to be covered with boards, and the horribly sagging roof had to be supported by timbers, the business was carried on - was even described as "good" some three weeks after Camille hit - as residents of the area needed supplies to repair and refurbish their severly damaged

homes and other buildings.
Although Alden Mauffray was 63 years old at that time, it did not take him too long to rebuild - the floor and foundation of the original building are all that could be saved -and to the .amazement of many, he was quickly back in full business.
Mr. Mauffray has one comment concerning the storm: People say ?Forget Camille? but if we forget we would leave our children and grandchildren possibly facing another such situation completely unprepared.
Although he describes his business as a ?2 by 4 country hardware store?, Alden Mauffray carries just about anything one could possibly need in the hardware line. His stock holds a fascination with a large variety containing kitchen items, fishing items, unusual items, but with all the charm of an old-fashioned general store.
