THE McCALL MASSACRE It took me two and a half years to find the truth about the McCall massacre. In about 1796, two families of McCalls came up East Pearl River to an area just south of where Hobolochitto Creek empties into Pearl River. Creek or Yamacraw Indians came to the site the same year and massacred the grown men. The survivors fled three miles southward and lived with the Chcctaw Indians on Indian Camp Branch. Duncan tfcCall was about eight years old when this happened. When he was old enough to marry, he merried the Chiefs daughter and named her Patsy. Their daughter Polly marriel Solomon Johnson. Their daughter Harriet married Reuben McCarty, my great grandfather. Seventy years ago Julius Mitchell saw two gravestones on the bank of McCall River, which was named in memory of the massacred settlers. If I had a boat, I would find out if they are still there. These gravestones could have been put there by Isabella McCall wife of Asa Hursey Sr. or by Emma Hursey, their daughter and wife of Charles W. McCarty, my great grandfathers oldest brother. In July 1995, I found out that the two graves were of Jesse McCall and Sherod McCall. One of them had a wife who was a Richard. It seems that they had a brother named Hugh McCall. Sherod and Jesse lived on the Savannah River in 1793. They bought land or attempted to buy land on the Tombigbe River in 1795 but did not stay there long. This movement from river to river means that they probably owned a boat at least 25 feet long, and that is how they came up Pearl River to their final resting place. I have read a local history book that said a boat was on the bottom of Pearl River near the mouth of Hobolochitto Creek. They thcught it was a Confederate boat, but it could be the McCall boat. In my opinion, no Civil War battle was fought at this location. If this boat could have been raised at a time when it was still intact, you could find at least one hole in the bottom, made with the same tomahawk that killed Sherod and Jesse McCall. I was told that a child survivor was named Alvin McCall, but I have found no record of this name. The name that fits this history and is on record is Duncan McCall, therefore I have used the name Duncan McCall. By John C. McCarty 46 Checker Mitchell Rd. Nicholson, Ms. 39463
