But for this annual spring tour, the pieces de resistance in every room of every home are the floral arrangements fashioned by garden club members for this special occasion. Members comb the countryside gathering wild flowers, ferns, and other greenery, and they raid their own gardens and those of their neighbors, and buy a few stems from commercial florists to fill in where needed.
"I think we bought some pink tulips, maybe a few other things, where we were short of something in a specific color," one member said.
"And I knocked at a door and asked a lady I didn’t even know if I could pick some lilacs from her yard," another said.
The blooms taken from bedded plants, from flowering trees and shrubs, and from the wild things growing everywhere have hardly depleted the supply, and there is no dearth of color indoors or out.
The Town and Country Garden Club can take credit for helping this small town in the heart of northeast Mississippi look its best. From landscaping to preservation and through education about both, they have reached young and old in schools and other organizations with their untiring efforts for many years.
Some homes on the annual spring home and garden tour rotate, "but we have Lochinvar every year," said Sadie Kenney.
Built in 1832 on the highest point of Pontotoc Ridge, Lochinvar is on the National Register of Historic Places and its unique architecture has been featured in books and magazines in this country and abroad. Last year, it was complemented by a variety of other styles of homes on the annual tour.
For instance, Mrs. Rosalee Furr describes her home on Main Street as similar to a Roman public building, nearly devoid of ornamentation, but with an obvious Victorian influence in its soaring windows. Constructed in the latter 1800s, Furr House offers an ideal setting for towering floral arrangements and for smaller bouquets in every nook and cranny. The home of Mr.
