WE CARE FUND
Immediately after Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast citizens from throughout the state began planning and working to assist the stricken area.
Plans were made in Jackson through the Mississippi Broadcasters Association and the Municipal Association to produce a telethon in the Mississippi Coliseum to raise $l-mil-lion and collect food and clothing for the Gulf Coast.
“We Care Sunday” opened at noon with the jazz music of Pete Fountain and was carried on every radio station and television station through the state and several neighboring states.Emcee Woodie Assaf introduced the artist.
Entertainers from throughout the nation began arriving for the telethon that was to raise $1.3-million in a 12-hour period.
Gov. John Bell Williams greeted the crowd as the show got underway and was followed by Lt. Gov. Charles Sullivan, Jackson Mayor Russell Davis and Miss Mississippi, Jane Carol Foshee.
Highlighting the telethon was an appearance by Bob Hope, who gave his time from a busy tour to devote it to the benefit. While speaking to the audience, Hope received a personal call from the President of the United States.
